The project was implemented in September-November 2024 on the basis of the lyceum ‘Vasile Alecsandri’ in Chişinău.

Its key elements were:

1. Educational masterclasses for schoolchildren on human rights, democracy and civic responsibility.
2. Simulations of democratic processes, including elections and debates.
3. Social projects aimed at solving local problems.
4. International debates with pupils from Romania, Poland and Estonia.

‘The highlight of the project was the ‘Caravan of Democracy’, during which students had the opportunity to learn the basic concepts of active citizenship and democracy, human dignity and responsibility. This was made possible thanks to an experience exchange project implemented at the lyceum by Anca Simionike, a teacher of civic education from Romania.

She shared with the students practical examples of how they can actively participate in the life of their community, express their opinions and be involved in local decisions, while showing civic dignity and responsibility.

In total, more than 800 students aged 12 to 18, as well as their parents and teachers, took part in 12 project activities.

Another result of the project was the creation of posters, flyers and publications on the theme of democratic values, which were actively disseminated on social networks. The lyceum students developed persuasive texts and distributed them in their communities, promoting participation in the referendum on European integration held in Moldova on 20 October.

During the presentation, which took place on 11 November in Chisinau, its organisers noted that the project proved that democratic education contributes to the formation of conscious, responsible and active citizens.

Such initiatives help the younger generation to adapt effectively to the requirements of modern society and strengthen the foundations of a democratic society.

More than 20 people took part in the presentation of the future publication, which was held in the capital of the country.

The book “Pedagogy of Citizenship Education” aims to develop in-depth knowledge, practical skills and personal dispositions conducive to active participation in civic life in order to build a just, peaceful and democratic society. This work is designed to develop in people a sense of responsibility and a desire for conscious action for the benefit of society. The main purpose of the book is to encourage readers to actively use civic knowledge and skills in everyday life.

The book is primarily addressed to teachers and trainers who teach citizenship education in schools or other educational institutions.

The book will describe the main goals and objectives of civic education, methods and approaches to teaching, provide useful materials and references.

The activities of the winning Eduthon projects are implemented by the East European Association for Civic Education with the support of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) with funds from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Adult Education Association of Azerbaijan coordinates the Eduthon in Azerbaijan.

During the meeting the results of the Network’s Working Groups will be presented, as well as the results of the Eduthons that took place in August and September in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Poland and Ukraine.

The results of the Eduthons and their impact on the development of civil society in their countries will be presented by national coordinators, experts and active participants of the project.

An important part of the meeting will be the planning of the Network’s work for 2025. The participants will discuss priorities for the work, as well as ideas for key activities that could form the basis for future work.

Next year will be an anniversary year for EENCE. The Network will celebrate its 10th anniversary and is already planning a number of large-scale events to mark the occasion.

Career Planning Training

On October 5 in Baku and October 11 in Masalli, one-day training sessions were conducted to develop essential career planning skills among the youth. The program included the following key sessions:

• Introduction to Career Planning,
• Self-Discovery: Identifying strengths and interests,
• Exploring Career Opportunities,
• Setting Goals using the SMART Method,
• Creating a Personal Career Plan,
• Conclusion and Reflection on Acquired Knowledge.

The training was organized in partnership with the Adult Education Consultation Center in Masalli and the State Pedagogical University in Baku.

A total of 32 participants took part, successfully developing individual career plans.

One-on-One Coaching Sessions

On October 18 in Masalli, six training participants received individual coaching sessions.

In a one-on-one format with a career coach, they refined their career plans, received specific recommendations for further steps in education and internships, and addressed potential challenges.

Results and Future Plans

The project successfully helped participants gain confidence in their career choices and develop step-by-step plans to achieve their goals. Follow-up meetings are planned to support participants in implementing their career aspirations.

A role-playing board game called the Council of Elders has been created and published as part of the Armenia for Armenia project. Two copies of the game have been printed so far.

The first meeting with young people aged 16 to 25 took place in the Amasia community of Shirak Marz. During this meeting, participants learned about civic education and discussed hate speech, human rights, good behavior, and the importance of free speech.

Participants had the opportunity to play a board game in the second part of the meeting. Each person chose a role, and the theme of the game was “Ani’s Community Garbage Collection.” The participants engaged enthusiastically throughout both the meeting and the game.

Information videos are currently being edited. The next meetings are scheduled in Gyumri, Vanadzor, and Ijevan.

Members of the Code of Ethics Local Self-Governing Body project have reached an agreement with the representatives from the Pambak and Tumanyan communities concerning the development of ethics regulations. 

They held discussions with council members and community leaders from both Pambak and Tumanyan to go over the provisions of the document.

The group discussed the ethical norms for municipal servants, the Code of Ethics for Members of the Council of Elders, how the Ethics Commission should be formulated, and how it should operate. A follow-up bilateral meeting is scheduled to finalize the document.

The Herbarium project team has begun active research on the herbs and mushrooms of the Lori region. The goal of the project is to explore and showcase the rich environment of this area to young people through photographs and discussions about upcoming environmental issues. 

The team organized several hiking in the mountains of Lori, capturing photos of various herbs and mushrooms that are in demand and at risk of being included in the Armenian Red Book as an endangered species.

The group has printed materials and scheduled appointments with specialists to discuss environmental issues at the upcoming event. The team is preparing to show up all the job done in the upcoming exhibition – event.

The workshop in Goranboy, held on 9 October, brought together representatives of local NGOs and local authorities. Participants included the Mayor of the Fakhrali Municipality of Goranboy and active local activists.

The meeting participants discussed how to increase people’s participation in addressing issues important to the local community, as well as how to improve interaction between local authorities and local activists.

And in Masalli on 11 October, local doctors, lawyers, students and teachers from Masalli Regional College discussed the causes and consequences of early and inbreeding marriages, as well as possible actions to prevent such marriages.

Eduthon winning projects identified in Azerbaijan

Eleven teams searched for places and learnt interesting historical facts about the secret student society ‘Philomaths and Philaretas’, which operated in Vilnius in the early 19th century, their members and the most famous member of the society – Adam Mickiewicz.

This theme found a great response from the quest participants – Belarusians living now in Lithuania), and here is why:

1) The heroes of the quest are common for Belarusian, Polish and Lithuanian history. By education and way of life they belonged to the common European elite, many of them were born on the Novogrudok land, within the borders of modern Belarus. This once again confirms that Belarusians associate themselves with European civilisation and European future.

2) Most of the heroes, to whom the quest was dedicated, after the trial of Philomatas and Filaretas were expelled from the Lithuanian lands to Russia or emigrated to Europe, but nevertheless did not disappear, each of them showed himself in emigration or in exile as a personality, studied nature, ethnography, founded museums, held positions in the new homeland. This throws an emotional ‘bridge’ between the heroes of the quest and its participants.

The quest participants searched for artefacts on the streets of Vilnius according to the tasks and entered the answers into a Telegram bot developed with the technical support of the Urban Legend startup. Each participant received souvenirs to remember the quest, and the teams that took the first 3 places received prizes.

The souvenirs and prizes were chosen according to the theme of the quest and reminded of the heroes and Vilnius University – the alma mater of the Philomaths and Philaretians, which was their intellectual centre.

The teams were given a special printout of the quests, made and stylised after the then newspaper ‘Wiadomości brukowe’

The final chord of the event was the Afterparty in the format of the Philomath party, which included a concert with songs of the 19th century, competitions on historical themes and awarding the winners.

The Green School in Georgia implements an educational project that aims to raise public and youth awareness about early marriage.

At the First Folk School of Kabali village and the youth centre of Akhmetetsi district, pupils watched the short film ‘Punami’s Fate’ and discussed the downside of early marriages.

The meetings also resulted in joint works and prints, which will be exhibited at various events in the region as a result of the project.

In Ukraine, activists of the public organisation ‘Plich-o-plich’ (Shoulder to Shoulder) continue to teach elderly people the basics of media literacy.

This time they travelled to the small villages of Syniv and Rusyvel, where they taught elderly residents how to use the different features of their smartphones.

We are engaged in documenting and preserving the stories of witnesses of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Against the background of declining public interest and war fatigue, as well as increasing Russian narratives and propaganda, we decided to publish these stories in Polish, English and Ukrainian. We invite you to visit our website, where you can learn about the mission and purpose of our organisation, as well as the articles we have published.

Our respondents, despite their experiences, find the strength to speak out, and our mission is to bring their voices to others. Russia’s war against Ukraine is not a local conflict, it is a war against the entire civilised world, a crime against humanity, a violation of all human rights, which are the pillars of a democratic society. Every story we have collected is direct evidence of this.

The testimonies of eyewitnesses of the war are collected by us not only to preserve the national memory, but also to improve public understanding of the war, to develop empathy for those who suffered from it, and to consolidate the world in the struggle for human rights and those values that should be protected at all times.
