Eleven teams searched for places and learnt interesting historical facts about the secret student society ‘Philomaths and Philaretas’, which operated in Vilnius in the early 19th century, their members and the most famous member of the society – Adam Mickiewicz.

This theme found a great response from the quest participants – Belarusians living now in Lithuania), and here is why:

1) The heroes of the quest are common for Belarusian, Polish and Lithuanian history. By education and way of life they belonged to the common European elite, many of them were born on the Novogrudok land, within the borders of modern Belarus. This once again confirms that Belarusians associate themselves with European civilisation and European future.

2) Most of the heroes, to whom the quest was dedicated, after the trial of Philomatas and Filaretas were expelled from the Lithuanian lands to Russia or emigrated to Europe, but nevertheless did not disappear, each of them showed himself in emigration or in exile as a personality, studied nature, ethnography, founded museums, held positions in the new homeland. This throws an emotional ‘bridge’ between the heroes of the quest and its participants.

The quest participants searched for artefacts on the streets of Vilnius according to the tasks and entered the answers into a Telegram bot developed with the technical support of the Urban Legend startup. Each participant received souvenirs to remember the quest, and the teams that took the first 3 places received prizes.

The souvenirs and prizes were chosen according to the theme of the quest and reminded of the heroes and Vilnius University – the alma mater of the Philomaths and Philaretians, which was their intellectual centre.

The teams were given a special printout of the quests, made and stylised after the then newspaper ‘Wiadomości brukowe’

The final chord of the event was the Afterparty in the format of the Philomath party, which included a concert with songs of the 19th century, competitions on historical themes and awarding the winners.

We are engaged in documenting and preserving the stories of witnesses of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Against the background of declining public interest and war fatigue, as well as increasing Russian narratives and propaganda, we decided to publish these stories in Polish, English and Ukrainian. Our respondents, despite their experiences, find the strength to speak out, and our mission is to bring their voices to others. Russia’s war against Ukraine is not a local conflict, it is a war against the entire civilised world, a crime against humanity, a violation of all human rights, which are the pillars of a democratic society. Every story we have collected is direct evidence of this.

The testimonies of eyewitnesses of the war are collected by us not only to preserve the national memory, but also to improve public understanding of the war, to develop empathy for those who suffered from it, and to consolidate the world in the struggle for human rights and those values that should be protected at all times.

The meeting took place on 28 and 29 September at the New Earth Hub. The participants were able not only to learn about the key cross-cutting values, but also to deepen their understanding through film analysis and group work.

What did the participants learn?

On the first day, they learnt about cross-cutting values such as:

• gender equality,
• human rights,
• environmentalism,
• inclusion.

They discussed how to integrate these values in planning projects and activities. This was followed by a screening of film clips from different genres, which was followed by a discussion. Participants discussed how cross-cutting values are reflected in everyday situations.

Film screenings and Swedish circle

The second day also started with film screenings, but the centrepiece was group work. Using the Swedish Circle method, the activists developed a checklist for activities that takes into account cross-cutting values. It can be found on the social media channel ‘to_chto_nado_channel’.

The project was an Eduthon winner

The authors of the project ‘Cross-Cutting Values of CHEK’ are the winners of the EENCE Citizenship Education Eduthon, which took place in Warsaw on 5-7 September.

The winners were determined after the final presentation of project ideas, which were finalised by the participants during the first two days of the event.

Here are the winning projects:

“A touch that saves”

Project goal: to improve women’s awareness of current trends in breast cancer treatment through an outreach programme.

Place of implementation: Warsaw, Poland.

“Raised Hand: Teachers want to be heard“

Project goal: to highlight the situation of education under Russian occupation in Ukraine in order to disseminate and preserve the historical memory of the resistance of education workers, their struggle for their civil rights and freedoms.

Place of implementation: Piaseczno, Poland.

“Consider cross-cutting values”

Project goal: to provide activists with basic knowledge and understanding of cross-cutting values by analysing film fragments, and to instil knowledge of individual values through the Swedish circle method.

Place of realisation: Poland.

“Belarus City Quest in Vilnius“

The aim of the project: to strengthen Belarusian identity and ties within the Belarusian diaspora in Vilnius through the formats of active, live immersion/study of Belarusian history, culture and language, to increase the number of people actively participating in the life of the Belarusian community in Vilnius.

Place of implementation: Vilnius, Lithuania.

Teams representing Ukrainian and Belarusan initiatives from Lithuania and Poland took part in Eduthon in Warsaw. As a result, two teams announced by Ukrainian teams and two Belarusan teams won.

Already in the near future they will start implementing projects in their communities in different cities in Poland and Lithuania.

How to make sure that your project ‘works’ to promote citizenship education, how to make it more logical and understandable, how to make it more attractive and interesting for participants and other stakeholders, how to organise sustainable project activities – these were the topics of the master classes presented by the experts.

Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to consult with experts on various aspects of their projects in order to better prepare for the final presentation, which will take place on 7 September.

The final presentation will determine the teams that will receive resources to implement their projects.

The Warsaw Eduthon (5-7 September) will bring together representatives of the Ukrainian and Belarusian diasporas from Lithuania and Poland.

Among the ideas announced for the event is the creation of a hub for creative co-operation between Ukrainian and Polish artists, for educational and other activities aimed at developing citizenship competences.

Several projects are aimed at helping displaced people in difficult situations and involving them in the life of their communities, raising awareness among young people, promoting cross-cutting values.

The projects announced from Ukraine (Eduthon will be held here on 6-8 September) offer solutions to the difficult situations in which the inhabitants of this country find themselves due to Russian aggression.

Therefore, the projects announced here are not only about education, citizenship participation and informing various target groups, but also about rehabilitation, art therapy for victims of war, and ensuring people’s safety.

Eduthon is a format of an educational event aimed at finalising the concepts of the project ideas that the participants announced.
