The Eastern European Network of Civic Education invites you to take part in the next meeting within the framework of the EENCE:Club project.

The topic of the meeting is Civic education for SDG No. 4 ” Education for all generations – a beautiful slogan or a reality?”

The discussion will take place on September 18, 2021, 12: 00 (CEST)

Working language: Russian

Lifelong learning has become firmly established in the lexicon of those who work in the field of education. However, do we really provide equal chances for education for all generations? The education of older people in the Eastern Partnership region and in Russia is still in its infancy and is carried out rather thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts.

The situation is even worse with civic education for the elderly. What is the reason for this? With the fact that the government is often not interested in this, or do older people themselves do not see the point of remaining / becoming active citizens? What social effects can the education of the elderly give? What challenges should those who are going to start/continue working in this field prepare for?

All this will be discussed by experts representing successful practices of educational work and activation of elderly people from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

The participants of the meeting, representing civil society and the expert community, will try to rethink the existing practices and problems in the field of education in the era of the pandemic.

The discussion will take place on September 4 at 16:00 (CEST).

COVID-19 has hit all the aspects of our life, creating new challenges and obstacles, also deteriorating the existing problems. Education is probably the field that has been affected most.

In our discussion we will particularly focus on the issues related to access to equity and quality education during the pandemic.

Students coming from the most vulnerable groups have endured the worst of the coronavirus disastrous effects and consequences.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Sustainable Development) states:

“COVID-19 has wipes out 20 years of Education gains”.

Experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Ukraine shared their views on the topic “Civil education for SDGs N16. Civil education in conflict territories: difficulties and opportunities”.

The purpose of the discussion is to draw the attention of interested providers of civic education to the territorial conflicts in the Eastern Partnership countries and Russia, and the specifics of working in these territories.

During EENCE:Club-5 considered three big issues from different points of view: the history of conflicts and their current state, the role of civil education in the conflict, ways to improve the effectiveness of civil education for conflict resolution.

The speakers of the meeting shared their expert vision of the topic: Chairman of the Board of the Center for Civil Liberties Alexandra Matveychuk (Ukraine), director of the Human Rights Program of the Promo LEX Association Alexandru Postica (Moldova), director of the Civil Platform for Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan Dilara Efendieva (Azerbaijan), political scientist, junior researcher at the Center for Strategic Studies of the Yerevan State Institute Edgar Elbakyan (Armenia). The meeting was moderated by Nazariy Boyarsky (Ukraine), a human rights activist, non-formal education coach, coordinator of the working group “Civil Education in Territorial Conflict Zones” of the Civil Education Network in Eastern Europe (EENCE).

– Any war and any armed conflict is not just military actions, it is also a war of narratives, it is a war of values. Civic education, in my opinion, should form the right narratives and the right democratic values: non-violence, solidarity, respect for human rights, the rule of law, – Alexandra Matveychuk is sure.

The participants managed to make an overview of the situation in the Transnistrian region, Nagorno-Karabakh, in the East of Ukraine (part of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions), the Crimea, to determine the difficulties and opportunities for implementing civic education programs in these territories.

The next EENCE:Club meeting, which will be held on August 21, will be devoted to this topic.

The space for discussion will be Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 – Quality education.

When: August 21, 2021 (12: 00 Central European Time (CET).

Working language: Russian.

Information and education are the main tools of change in society.

Well-informed and educated citizens are able to resist propaganda and manipulation of public opinion, ensure transparency in making decisions that are important for society, expose cases of human rights violations, corruption, discrimination, etc.

That is why in authoritarian and totalitarian societies, the authorities strive to ensure control over the media and the education system by all means. At the same time, the forces of the state and civil society are often very unequal.

Do citizens have a chance to win this “war”?

What role does media literacy and civic education play here?

Is there a chance to “grow” a critical mass of media-literate people who will make democratic changes sustainable?

What are the effects of the introduction of media literacy programs that the Eastern Partnership countries, as well as Russia, can boast of?

We will talk about all this with experts who represent three countries with very different experiences of democratic transformations: Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine.

Experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Ukraine will share their views on the topic “Civil education for SDGs N16. Civil education in conflict territories: difficulties and opportunities”.

The discussion will take place on August 7, 2021 at 12.00 (CEST).

Working language: Russion.

Register here.

No century in the history of mankind has been without territorial conflicts in the world.

At the same time, such conflicts have many negative consequences: the death of people, the emergence of refugees and internally displaced persons, the destruction of homes and infrastructure facilities, the devaluation of international treaties and law in general, the creation of an image of an enemy from certain social groups, etc.

Civic education is generally understood as a process of forming skills, knowledge and values that promotes active and responsible participation in public life.

Because of its vastness and effectiveness, it can be used by different parties and groups involved in the conflict: both for the purpose of achieving democratic transformations, and for the purpose of ideological propaganda directed against the principles of democracy and human rights.

During the discussion, the participants will consider the current situation in the Transnistrian region, in Nagorno-Karabakh, in the Crimea and in the East of Ukraine, as well as discuss the possibilities of education in overcoming the consequences of conflicts.

The discussion focused on environmental sustainability, which is the responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global ecosystems to maintain health and well-being now and in the future.

Currently, there is a lot of evidence that climate change is a global problem that affects everyone and everywhere.

The moderator Viorica Olaru-Cemirtan( Sweden/Moldova) shared her impressions:

It was a mindful and insightful panel discussion. We had three guest speakers that shared with us their genuine grass-root experience from Sweden, Russia and Moldova and I realized that there are diverse visions, various resources, multiple tools, polyvalent competencies and great goals, in our way to protect earth and ecosystems for the benefit of our present and future generations, to ensure environmental sustainability in a smart way.
